about

Key figure of Milky Way Gas Station is multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Rob IJpelaan. He gathered a group of musicians around him who, just like him, loves long, epic songs full of dynamics and changing time signature. The debut album Somewhere / Anywhere, in which Opeth keyboardist Joakim Svalberg also participated, was very well received.

Milky Way Gas Station was founded in 2010. Drummer Harald Veenker, bass player Jeroen Vriend and guitarist Rob de Jong played together in Kramer, an Amsterdam progrock band that performed in venues such as Paradiso, Hedon and De Boerderij and also gave concerts in Germany, England and Lithuania. In 2010 they met IJpelaan. His way of working appealed to Veenker, Vriend and De Jong. When De Jong, the brother of Erik "Spinvis" de Jong, emigrated to the United States in 2012, the others brought in guitarist Niels Hoppe. Hoppe studied guitar at the conservatory in Alkmaar and was three times in the final of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, with Q65, Vera Lynn and Corey. He won the prize in 2002 with Corey.

The perfectionist Milky Way Gas Station worked on Somewhere / Anywhere for five years. Joakim Svalberg happened to come in contact with Veenker, heard the demo and was enthusiastic. The keyboard player of the well-known Swedish Progmetal band Opeth asked if he could add some keyboard parts, an offer that was accepted with great thanks. Svalberg's renowned Dutch colleague Jan-Peter Bast (including The Scene, The Charity) also plays on the album. Bast, teacher at the conservatory in Haarlem, is now officially part of MWGS. Since December 2018 Boudewijn Geels is the bass player of the band.

Somewhere / Anywere - co-produced by Maarten Tap - was very much appreciated by the Progwereld website. That spoke of a "beautiful album with 73 minutes of fascinating music", with "unparalleled" solos from Bast. Magazine Rock Affairs praised the input of guest singer Lana Wolf in the number 37 Part II and wrote: "The individual qualities in combination with the input of a number of big names makes this a great class album."

about

Milky Way Gas Station Amsterdam, Netherlands

The band members come from different outskirts of the prog universe. They found each other in the simple truth of a real song: start with an acoustic guitar, blend it with synth or hammond, add some drums and bass and there you go. Some songs have odd time signatures but sound like 'regular' songs. Even if they last for about half an hour. Finding the exit of a song sometimes just takes some time. ... more
